The tiny, newly licensed production brewery at the southern tip of Ocean County began brewing Friday evening, a day after New Jersey regulators granted a license to make beer.

Pinelands Brewing GrowlerCo-owners Jason Chapman and Luke McCooley ran through a 1-barrel brew of Evergreen IPA, then followed-up on Saturday with another 1-barrel IPA batch to top off the fermenter. (Pinelands’ other co-owners are John Kugler, Sean Collins and Nick Brown.)

A 1-barrel batch of Evan John Porter, an all-Cascade-hopped vanilla porter, finished up the busy inaugural production run in the brewery’s 1,000-square-foot home in a small strip of a business park in Little Egg Harbor. The bayfront township is 20 minutes north of Atlantic City.

Jason says the goal now is to brew and stock as much beer as possible for a planned opening around Presidents Day weekend. So far, they’ve done batches of IPA, porter and a rye pale ale, also done Friday. A batch of Mason’s Wheat is next on the brew schedule.

“So far, so good,” Jason tells Beer-Stained Letter. “No major hitches, nothing we didn’t expect brewing. The 2 barrels of IPA are going nicely.”

Evergreen IPA clocks in at 65 IBU from Chinook and Nugget hops. For reference, that’s where Founders Centennial IPA stands with its hop punch, though at 6.0% ABV Pinelands’ foray into the style is slightly lighter in alcohol.

Pinelands Brewing Vorlauf2Evergreen is finished off with Jason’s go-to aroma hop, Willamette. Putting it in Pinelands’ IPA is also a nod to the Pacific Northwest.

“My brother was living there for a period of time, teaching at the University of Washington,” Jason says. “I spent some time visiting there; the beer culture there is unrivaled.”

Evan John Porter (4.3% ABV) is a name-check of Jason’s son who was born ago four years ago, around the time Jason and Luke started scouting locations to open a small brewery. Mason's Wheat is named after Luke’s son.
